The forgotten physical side of feeding

For decades, almost every serious conversation about feeding dogs has begun with the same question: what should the dog eat?
Protein. Fat. Carbohydrates. Vitamins and minerals. Kibble or wet food. Raw or cooked. Fresh or processed. Complete-and-balanced formulations. Allergies. Life stage. Digestibility. Palatability.
These are important questions. They are also overwhelmingly questions about what goes into the dog.
There is another question we think deserves more attention:
What does the dog physically get to do while eating it?
That question sounds almost too simple. Once you ask it, though, an entire part of feeding becomes visible.
Dogs do not only swallow nutrients. Depending on the food or chew in front of them, they may grip it, brace against it, pull, tear, strip, scrape, lick, gnaw, chew, twist and reposition it.
Those actions are not a nutritional formulation. They are the physical mechanics of feeding.
And that distinction is what eventually led us to Structural Feeding™.

Nutrition and feeding are related. They are not identical.

A nutritionally complete meal can answer the question of what nutrients the dog receives.
It does not, by itself, describe the physical feeding event.
A bowl of prepared food may be an entirely appropriate way to deliver a dog's main diet. We are not arguing otherwise.
But a bowl is also a feeding interface. It presents food in a particular physical form and asks relatively little of the dog mechanically compared with an intact or substantial item that must be held, pulled, torn, stripped or worked.
So perhaps the useful question is not whether bowls are good or bad.
Perhaps it is:
When did one very useful feeding interface become almost synonymous with feeding itself?
That is a different conversation from the endless raw-versus-kibble fight, and we think it is a more interesting one.

What does the evidence say about chewing?

This is not an area where responsible people should make sweeping claims.
A 2025 peer-reviewed review in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, led by researchers from the University of Sydney's veterinary school, examined the functional significance and welfare implications of chewing in domestic dogs.
The review considered chewing across food acquisition, ingestive behaviour, self-care and other functions, and examined potential relationships with oral health, digestive processes, psychological state and welfare.
Its authors concluded that chewing appears to contribute positively to canine welfare and is likely to be an important regular component of dogs' lives. They also made clear that important questions remain about individual requirements, appropriate substrates, duration and risk.
That last part matters.
Chewing is not automatically beneficial simply because a dog is chewing something.
Veterinary guidance warns that very hard bones and chew objects can fracture teeth. Bones and other items can present choking or gastrointestinal hazards. Raw animal products can carry microbiological risks for dogs and humans.
We therefore reject both extremes.
"Natural" does not mean harmless.
But the existence of risk does not mean the underlying behaviour becomes irrelevant either.
The useful territory lies between those positions.

Does a dog actually want to work for food?

Another useful piece of evidence comes from a 2024 Scientific Reports study examining contrafreeloading in pet dogs.
The dogs were willing to work for food using a snuffle mat, but as a group they did not prefer the effortful option when identical food was freely available at the same time.
That finding is valuable precisely because it stops us making a convenient marketing claim.
We cannot simply say, "dogs naturally want to work for every meal."
The evidence does not support that absolute statement.
Instead, it points toward a more sensible principle: opportunity, individual preference and context matter.
There is also an important distinction worth exploring in future research and discussion.
A dog working to obtain food is not necessarily the same physical problem as a dog working the food itself.
A puzzle feeder may make access more difficult. A substantial food item may instead require gripping, tearing, bracing or manipulating after access has already been achieved.
Are those experiences behaviourally equivalent?
We do not know that they are.
It is exactly the kind of question that deserves asking rather than assuming.

The missing mechanical question

Our own route into this subject was not academic.
It was a dog, a piece of substantial food and an ordinary physical problem.
When our Belgian Malinois, Phoenix, worked large foods and long-duration chews, the item needed something to resist his force.
If it was loose, he created that resistance himself.
Paws. Ground. Dirt. Grass. Floors. Furniture. Whatever stopped the item moving became part of the feeding system.
That led to a very basic engineering question:
If the dog pulls, what pushes back?
And then a second question:
Why was that side of the feeding interaction largely being left to the environment?
We spent years solving that physical problem through prototypes, observation, CAD, testing and eventually purpose-designed hardware.
The result became BoneZone®.
Only later did we realise we needed language for the broader thing the apparatus was enabling.

What we mean by Structural Feeding™

Structural Feeding™ is Petelli's term for a defined companion-animal feeding approach in which appropriate substantial foods and long-duration chews are presented against stable external physical structure, creating controlled resistance against which the dog can grip, pull, tear, scrape, lick, gnaw and work.
It is not a diet.
It is not BARF, prey-model feeding or a prescription to feed bones.
It does not tell an owner what their dog's nutrient profile should be.
It concerns the physical presentation and management of an appropriate item.
The simplest version is:
The food has structure. Now the feeding environment does too.
BoneZone® is the apparatus we developed around that problem.
It secures an appropriate bone, substantial food or long-duration chew to stable physical structure so that the dog's force meets controlled external resistance rather than relying entirely on paws, floors, soil or furniture.
That gives the owner greater control over position, height, movement, location and removal.
It does not make an inappropriate item appropriate.

Hardware was not enough

Once we began describing Structural Feeding™ properly, another thing became obvious.
Responsible use could not begin and end with instructions for tightening a clamp.
The dog matters. The item matters. The environment matters. The setup matters. The dog's actual behaviour during the session matters. And all of those things can change while the session is underway.
That is why we developed the Five-Stage Structural Feeding™ Educational Framework:

ASSESS → SELECT → SET → GRAPPLE → CHECK

ASSESS the individual dog and circumstances.
SELECT an appropriate item for that dog and session.
SET the apparatus and feeding environment before introducing the dog.
The dog then GRAPPLES - gripping, bracing, pulling, tearing, stripping, scraping, gnawing, licking, chewing or otherwise working the item as appropriate.
And the owner CHECKS throughout the session, reassessing the dog, item, hardware and changing conditions.
It is deliberately a loop, not a one-time checklist.
An item can become smaller. Softer material can disappear and harder surfaces become exposed. Behaviour can change. Hardware or position can shift. A sensible decision at the beginning of a session may need to change ten minutes later.
That is not a guarantee of safety. It is simply a more deliberate way to manage a physical activity that already contains variables and recognised risks.

So who owns this part of feeding?

This is where the subject becomes bigger than our product.
The pet-food industry has become extraordinarily sophisticated at formulation, processing, preservation, palatability, nutrient delivery and convenience.
Behaviourists study what dogs do.
Animal-welfare researchers study experience and outcomes.
Veterinary professionals manage health and disease.
Enrichment products create opportunities for activity.
Designers make bowls, toys and feeding devices.
But where does the deliberate physical architecture of feeding sit?
If an appropriate substantial food is going to be gripped and pulled, who traditionally designs what it pulls against?
Maybe nobody ignored the problem.
Maybe nobody clearly owned it.
Perhaps it sat between established categories: too mechanical for nutrition, too behavioural for hardware, too ordinary to attract much attention as a standalone problem.
We do not pretend to have the final scientific answer to that question.
We do know that it was a real enough physical problem for us to spend years building something around it.
And now that we have a way to describe it, we think the question is worth opening to everybody else.

Pete's Perspective

BoneZone® did not begin with a theory about canine welfare or an attempt to create a new category.
It began because I watched Phoenix work food and chews and kept seeing the same physical problem.
The item moved. He restrained it however he could. The environment became part of the process. I wanted more control over that interaction.
So I started building.
Years later, the surprising part is not that we ended up with a piece of aluminium hardware. It is that explaining why the hardware works the way it does forced us to separate nutrition from the physical act of feeding and finally put language around something we had already been doing.
We didn't invent gripping, tearing or chewing.
We built a controllable structure for those behaviours to work against.
That is Structural Feeding™.
And the question we are now putting to dog owners, veterinarians, researchers and the wider pet industry is simple:
We're not asking what your dog eats. We're asking what your dog gets to do.
