Dogs can grip, brace, pull, tear, strip, scrape, gnaw, lick, chew and manipulate substantial foods and long-duration chews. In a domestic environment, those activities need somewhere to happen and, where appropriate, something stable for the item to work against.
Petelli developed BoneZone® after years of working on that physical problem. The apparatus came first. Structural Feeding™ is the language and practical framework we later developed to explain the approach clearly and help owners manage it responsibly.
This is not a diet. It is not a claim that every dog should eat bones. It is not veterinary treatment.
It is a simple process for thinking about the dog, the item, the setup, the interaction and the changing session.
The Five-Stage Structural Feeding™ Framework
The framework works as a loop because dogs, foods, chews and setups can change during a session. CHECK can send you back to ASSESS, SELECT or SET; or tell you it is time to stop.

Know the dog before choosing the feed.
A - Age & ability
Consider age, physical capability, experience, mobility and known dental limitations.
S - Size & strength
Consider body size, jaw strength, pulling power and the forces the dog is likely to apply.
S - Style
How does this dog work food and chews? Patient gnawing and stripping? Hard pulling? Crushing? Attempted swallowing? High excitement?
E - Environment
Consider location, surface, mounting structure, other animals, children, distractions, hygiene and working space.
S - State
Consider hunger, excitement, fatigue, arousal, frustration and willingness to settle into the activity.
S - Supervision
Can this session actually be supervised? If not, postpone it or choose another appropriate feeding activity.
The point
There is no useful universal rule that treats every dog, chew and circumstance as identical.
02 - SELECT
Match the item to the dog and the session.
S - Size
Consider the item relative to the dog's mouth, body size, chewing style and potential to swallow or break off portions.
E - Edibility
Is it intended to be eaten, substantially consumed, stripped of softer material, or primarily worked as a long-duration chew?
L - Load
Consider how shape, toughness and available purchase may influence pulling, twisting, bracing or biting force.
E - Exposure
Look at what is exposed: meat, connective tissue, cartilage, softer edible structures, dense bone, cut faces, edges or previously worked areas.
C - Condition
Check freshness, storage history, cleanliness, damage, deterioration and what happened during any previous session.
T - Time
Decide what kind of session is intended, then reassess duration according to the dog, the item and what actually happens.

03 - SET
Prepare before introducing the dog.
S - Secure
Secure the BoneZone® apparatus using an appropriate configuration and confirm that the supporting structure, mount and hardware are stable.
E - Elevate & engage
Set the working height and orientation, then position the selected item correctly in the jaws.
T - Tighten & test
Clamp the item, lock the relevant hardware and manually test the complete setup before introducing the dog.

04 - GRAPPLE
Let the dog work the item against structure.
GRAPPLE is not another acronym and it is not a command sequence. It describes the food-working behaviours that stable external resistance can enable.
Depending on the dog and item, that may include:
Not every behaviour occurs in every session and they are not a prescribed sequence.
The important difference is simple: the item has something stable to work against.
Structural Feeding™ is concerned with the physical act of feeding as well as the food itself. Stable presentation changes the mechanical relationship between dog and item while allowing the owner greater control over where and how it is presented.
GRAPPLE does not mean encouraging maximum force or turning a hard object into a tug-of-war contest. Appropriate item selection remains fundamental.
05 - CHECK
Supervision is active, not passive.
C - Clamp & configuration
Has the item shifted, rotated, loosened or changed enough to affect how it is held?
H - Hardware
Check jaws, pins, fasteners, mounts, straps and supporting structure. Stop and correct anything that moves or loosens.
E - Engagement
Watch what the dog is actually doing. Calm stripping or gnawing can become harder biting, frantic pulling or attempted swallowing.
C - Chew condition
Reassess size, shape, exposed surfaces, hardness, loosened portions and remaining edible material as the item changes.
K - Know when to stop
End the session when the dog, item, apparatus or environment tells you that continuing is no longer appropriate.

Why we built it this way
Structural Feeding™ uses a simple decision-and-control cycle influenced by practical risk-management principles: understand what you are dealing with, choose appropriately, put sensible controls in place, observe what actually happens, and change the plan when conditions change.
That approach reflects years of practical BoneZone® development and the founder's professional background in workplace health, safety and risk assessment.
We are not turning feeding a dog into a workplace safety exercise. The aim is the opposite: take sound risk-management thinking and reduce it to something an ordinary dog owner can understand and remember.

Structural Feeding™ is an educational framework developed by Petelli Ventures for the physical presentation and management of appropriate substantial foods and long-duration chews.
It does not provide veterinary diagnosis, treatment or individual dietary prescription. BoneZone® does not make an unsuitable bone, food or chew suitable and does not eliminate risks associated with chewing, hard items, raw foods or individual animal health conditions.
Owners remain responsible for selecting items appropriate to their individual dog, supervising use, maintaining the equipment and seeking veterinary or other appropriately qualified professional advice where a dental, medical, nutritional or behavioural concern exists.

Chewing is increasingly receiving serious attention in canine-welfare research. A 2025 peer-reviewed review in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, led by researchers from the University of Sydney's veterinary school, concluded that chewing appears to contribute positively to canine welfare while emphasising recognised risks and gaps in evidence. A separate 2024 study found pet dogs were willing to work for food but did not generally prefer an effortful option when identical free food was available.
Veterinary authorities warn that bones and very hard chew items can contribute to dental fracture, choking and gastrointestinal problems, and that raw animal products can create microbiological risks for pets and people.
