Depending on the food or chew, dogs may grip, brace, pull, tear, strip, scrape, lick, gnaw, chew, twist and manipulate what is in front of them.
Those actions are not about nutritional formulation. They are the physical act of feeding.
Petelli developed Structural Feeding™ as a defined way to describe and manage that physical side of the interaction.
What is Structural Feeding™?
The idea can be reduced to a simple physical relationship:
The dog applies force. The food or chew transmits that force. Stable external structure provides the opposing resistance.
Structural Feeding™ is not a diet
Structural Feeding™ does not tell you whether to feed kibble, raw, fresh, cooked or another nutritionally appropriate diet.
It is not BARF, prey-model feeding or a veterinary nutrition program. It does not claim every dog should eat bones. It does not turn an unsuitable chew into a suitable one.
It concerns how an appropriate substantial food or long-duration chew is physically presented and managed.
Your dog's nutritional needs remain a separate question.
Why did we develop it?
Structural Feeding™ did not begin as terminology. It began as a practical problem.
For years, we watched our Belgian Malinois, Phoenix, work substantial foods and long-duration chews. Like other dogs, he created resistance wherever he could find it. His paws. The ground. Dirt. Grass. Floors. Furniture. Whatever stopped the item moving became part of the feeding system.
That led to a simple engineering question:
The hardware came first
We spent years developing hardware around that problem through observation, prototypes, CAD, testing and repeated real-world use.
Only later did we realise that calling BoneZone® a "bone holder" described what the clamp did but failed to explain why holding the item mattered.
The important part was the resistance. BoneZone® was providing a stable structure for the dog to work against.
Structural Feeding™ became our language for the broader approach the apparatus had already been enabling.
Where BoneZone® fits
BoneZone® is the engineering layer. It can give the owner greater control over:
- the location of the feeding or chewing session;
- the position and working height of the item;
- how freely the item can move;
- environmental contact;
- and when the item is removed.
That does not eliminate the normal considerations that come with selecting food and chews for dogs. The dog still matters. The item still matters.
Dental condition, chewing style, size, hardness, hygiene, swallowing behaviour, environment and supervision still matter.
That is why Structural Feeding™ is more than apparatus instructions.
The Five-Stage Structural Feeding™ Framework

01 ASSESS
Know the dog before choosing the feed.
Consider age and ability, size and strength, chewing style, environment, current state and whether the session can actually be supervised.
02 SELECT
Match the item to the dog and the session.
Consider size, edibility, expected load, exposed surfaces, condition and intended session time.
03 SET
Prepare before introducing the dog.
Secure the apparatus, set a practical working height and orientation, engage the selected item correctly, tighten and manually test the complete setup.
04 GRAPPLE
Let the dog work the item against structure.
Depending on the dog and item, this may include gripping, bracing, pulling, tearing, stripping, scraping, gnawing, licking, chewing, twisting and manipulating. GRAPPLE does not mean encouraging maximum force or turning the session into a tug-of-war against an impossibly hard object.
05 CHECK
Supervision is active, not passive.
Observe the item, clamp, hardware, dog behaviour and changing chew condition. Stop, reset, change the item or reassess whenever conditions change.

The assessment continues throughout the session.
An item can become smaller. Softer material can disappear. Harder material can become exposed. Behaviour can change. Position can shift.
Why this approach matters to us
The Five-Stage Framework reflects a simple principle from practical risk management.
Our founder's professional background includes years in workplace health, safety and risk assessment, but Structural Feeding™ is deliberately not a formal workplace risk-assessment process.
It is the opposite: a short, memorable way for an ordinary dog owner to make more deliberate decisions around a physical feeding activity. It does not promise zero risk.
The evidence and the risks
What does current research tell us?
Chewing itself is increasingly receiving serious attention in canine-welfare research.
A 2025 peer-reviewed review in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, led by researchers from the University of Sydney's veterinary school, examined chewing across food acquisition, ingestive behaviour, oral effects, psychological health and welfare. The authors concluded that chewing appears to contribute positively to canine welfare and is likely important as a regular part of dogs' lives, while also emphasising recognised risks and significant gaps in evidence.
That does not prove Structural Feeding™ improves welfare. It does show that chewing and physical food-related behaviour are legitimate subjects of scientific interest.
A separate 2024 study found pet dogs were willing to work for food but did not generally prefer an effortful option when identical free food was available. That is another useful reminder not to turn "work" into an ideology.
Structural Feeding™ is not about making every meal difficult. It is about providing and managing a particular kind of physical interaction where it is appropriate for the dog, item and circumstances.
Recognised risks still matter
Veterinary authorities warn that bones and very hard chew items can contribute to dental fracture, choking and gastrointestinal problems. Raw animal products can also create microbiological risks for pets and people.
BoneZone® does not make those biological considerations disappear. A secure item can still be an inappropriate item.
That is why ASSESS, SELECT and CHECK are part of Structural Feeding™ rather than optional fine print.

The bigger question
The pet world has become extraordinarily sophisticated at deciding what goes into the dog.
Nutritionists formulate diets. Pet-food companies optimise ingredients, processing, palatability, preservation and convenience. Behaviourists and welfare researchers study what dogs do and experience. Designers create bowls, toys and enrichment products.
But where does the deliberate physical architecture of feeding sit? If a dog is going to grip and pull an appropriate substantial food, what should it pull against? Who traditionally owns that problem?
Maybe nobody ignored it. Maybe nobody clearly owned it.
For us, that question emerged only after years of trying to solve the physical problem in front of us. BoneZone® became our engineering answer. Structural Feeding™ became the language and educational framework around it.
We are now putting the wider question on the table for dog owners, veterinarians, behaviourists, welfare researchers, designers and the pet industry to consider.
