Man's Best Friend. But Is a Bone a Dog's Best Friend?
What biology, evolution and welfare science say about letting dogs work for their food
We call the dog man's best friend.
Maybe that friendship has become so close that we have started forgetting one fairly important detail.
The dog is still a dog.
We invite dogs into our homes, onto our couches and into our beds. We celebrate their birthdays. We buy them clothes. We call ourselves dog mums and dog dads. For people living alone, a dog may be their closest daily companion. In many households the phrase "part of the family" is not sentimental exaggeration - it describes how people genuinely experience the relationship.
Much of that is wonderful.
But there is a welfare question hiding inside it:
At what point does loving a dog like a human begin to interfere with allowing it to behave like a dog?
And feeding may be one of the clearest places to ask it.
We have become extraordinarily good at putting nutritionally complete food into a dog bowl.
But a bowl is a human solution to food presentation.
The animal standing over it inherited a very different biological toolkit.
Teeth designed to grip, puncture, shear, crush and process.
Jaws capable of applying substantial force.
A neck and body that participate in food manipulation.
Paws used to orient and restrain objects.
A behavioural repertoire that includes gripping, pulling, tearing, stripping, gnawing, licking, chewing and manipulating.
We have not bred all of that out of the dog simply because the food now arrives from a bag, tin, refrigerator or delivery truck.
So perhaps the better question is not whether a bone is literally every dog's best friend.
It is this:
Have we become so focused on what goes into the dog that we are gradually designing the dog out of the act of eating?
Watch a dog play tug
There is an absurdly simple demonstration available in millions of backyards.Offer an appropriate dog a tug toy.The dog grips.You resist.The dog pulls harder.It braces through its front end, shifts its weight, changes its head angle, repositions its bite and recruits more of its body into the interaction.Dogs differ enormously in motivation and style, and not every individual loves tug. But tug behaviour is sufficiently widespread that it appears routinely in canine behavioural assessments and experimental studies of human-directed play.We accept this without thinking twice.We manufacture ropes, rubber tugs, bite pillows and toys specifically so the dog can pull against something.And that raises an interesting question.Why does resistance seem completely normal when the object is a rope, yet become almost absent from the way we think about feeding?
The point is not that tug-of-war and feeding are biologically identical. They are not.The point is that a dog applying force through its mouth against resistance is hardly an alien behaviour that humans recently invented.Resistance creates interaction.The more interesting question is what happens when the object being worked is not a rope at all, but an appropriate substantial food item that itself requires gripping, pulling, tearing, stripping or gnawing.
The carcass already supplies structure
Watch wild canids feed and one physical fact is difficult to miss.
Their food often comes with its own mass, attachment and structure.
A carcass does not behave like a bowl of minced food.
Skin resists.
Connective tissue resists.
Muscle must be separated.
Parts must be gripped and manipulated.
The mass of the carcass, attachment of tissues and sometimes other animals feeding from it create forces against which an animal works.
This is not romantic speculation about wolves. Feeding ecology and direct observation of wild canids document prolonged interaction with carcasses and substantial prey remains.
The 2025 review Functional significance and welfare implications of chewing in dogs draws evidence from domestic, free-ranging and wild canids. It reports Australian dingoes spending an average of 26.1 minutes in feeding bouts on sambar deer carcasses and 52-80 minutes on kangaroo carcasses depending on environment. Captive African wild dogs reportedly spent 58.7 minutes feeding on whole carcasses compared with only 3.2 minutes when given meat pieces.
That does not prove that every pet dog needs a carcass.
It demonstrates something much more useful:
physical form changes the feeding event.
The same review describes chewing as part of food acquisition and pre-swallowing food processing and notes the use of the forelimbs and claws to orient and hold items. It discusses gripping, dismembering flesh from bone and accessing tissues as part of the canid feeding repertoire.
Meanwhile, Yellowstone researchers routinely study wolves at kills and carcasses, and National Park Service material describes wolves defending prey carcasses and returning to carcasses to continue feeding.
Anyone who grew up watching natural-history documentaries - the kind of footage David Attenborough made familiar to generations - already recognises the scene.
The animal is not standing over a ceramic bowl politely consuming identical pieces.
It is working food.
That observation does not tell us exactly how to feed a domestic dog.
But it should stop us pretending that the mechanics of feeding are biologically irrelevant.
Domestication changed the dog's world. It did not erase the dog.
Dogs are not wolves.
That needs to be stated plainly because lazy arguments in both directions often begin by pretending they are.
Thousands of years of domestication changed dogs profoundly - behaviourally, socially, morphologically and physiologically. Modern breeds themselves vary enormously.
A Chihuahua is not a Malinois.
A twelve-year-old dog with compromised teeth is not a two-year-old working dog.
A brachycephalic companion breed is not mechanically equivalent to a sighthound or livestock guardian.
That variation is precisely why blanket rules are so unsatisfying.
But domestication did not eliminate chewing.
The 2025 Frontiers review calls chewing a ubiquitous canine behaviour and examines it through both Tinbergen's ethological framework and the Five Domains model of animal welfare. Its authors conclude that chewing appears to contribute positively to canine physical and psychological welfare while emphasising that benefits must be weighed against genuine risks.
That balance matters enormously.
The science does not say:
Give every dog every bone.
Nor does it support the opposite intellectual shortcut:
Bones can cause harm, therefore remove the entire category and stop thinking.
The interesting territory lies between those two absolutes.
Telos: the dogness of the dog
Animal-welfare science sometimes uses the concept of telos - broadly, the characteristic nature of an animal and its opportunity to express behaviours important to that nature.
The Frontiers review explicitly considers chewing through this lens. It notes that opportunities to engage in behaviours belonging to a dog's normal comfort, ingestive and social repertoire can contribute to positive welfare.
That is a profound idea when applied to modern companion dogs.
Good welfare is not merely keeping an animal alive for as long as possible.
It is not simply removing every conceivable source of injury.
A life can be physically protected and still behaviourally impoverished.
Modern welfare thinking increasingly asks not only whether an animal is free from suffering, but whether it has opportunities for positive experiences and species-relevant behaviour.
So the question becomes:
When we remove a natural or strongly motivated behaviour because it carries some risk, what - if anything - are we replacing it with?
Sometimes the answer is excellent.
We replace uncontrolled chasing with structured play.
We replace hunting opportunities with scent work.
We replace biting inappropriate objects with appropriate chew items.
We replace physical conflict with tug toys and games.
But feeding deserves the same scrutiny.
If substantial food once supplied opportunities to grip, restrain, pull, tear, strip and gnaw, is replacing the entire physical event with rapidly consumed homogeneous food always neutral from a behavioural perspective?
We do not yet have enough evidence to answer that completely.
That is exactly why the question deserves research rather than dismissal.
We may have replaced the carcass with a rope
There is an irony here.
We often deliberately manufacture non-food objects so dogs can perform behaviours that food itself once demanded.
Tug ropes provide resistance.
Chew toys provide prolonged oral manipulation.
Puzzle feeders make food harder to acquire.
Snuffle mats make dogs search.
Lick mats prolong licking.
Enrichment research recognises that animals benefit from opportunities to interact with their environment, and canine enrichment studies include interactive toys, stuffed food toys and tug play among the activities being investigated.
None of those things is inherently bad. Many are useful.
But step back far enough and the question becomes almost comical:
Did we simplify food until much of the physical behaviour disappeared, then build an entire enrichment industry to put pieces of that behaviour back?
That is not an accusation against pet-food companies, veterinarians or owners.
It is a question about how domestic systems evolve.
Convenience solves real problems.
Hygiene matters.
Nutritional consistency matters.
Domestic environments matter.
Safety matters.
But convenience can also remove complexity.
Sometimes that is beneficial.
Sometimes the complexity was doing something.
The danger of loving dogs entirely on human terms
There is another uncomfortable piece of this discussion.
The closer dogs move into human family life, the easier it becomes to interpret their needs through a human lens.
Scientific literature on companion-animal anthropomorphism recognises both sides of this. Humanising animals can strengthen attachment, empathy, adoption and willingness to invest in their care. But researchers also warn that anthropomorphic practices can conflict with an animal's biological or behavioural needs when human preferences replace species-appropriate ones.
That distinction is crucial.
Treating a dog as family can be wonderful.
Treating a dog as though it were biologically human is something else.
We feed from bowls that resemble our plates.
We schedule eating around our routines.
We portion, process and present food for cleanliness and convenience.
We become understandably anxious about anything that could injure an animal we love.
And because dogs' lives are shorter than ours, many owners eventually experience a particularly cruel bargain: the more deeply the dog is integrated into the family, the more devastating its loss becomes.
It is therefore unsurprising that owners become risk-averse.
But risk aversion can quietly become something else.
Risk elimination as a philosophy of animal care.
And that is where welfare becomes more complicated.
There is no life without risk
A dog can fracture a tooth on an excessively hard object.
That risk is real.
Veterinary dental guidance deserves to be taken seriously. The American Animal Hospital Association, for example, advises against very hard treats such as antlers and natural or synthetic bones where they may damage tooth structure.
Dogs can also choke.
They can swallow inappropriate pieces.
Raw animal products can carry pathogens.
Items can splinter, deteriorate or change as they are worked.
Dogs differ in dental condition, jaw strength, chewing style, experience and tendency to gulp.
These are reasons for risk assessment.
They are not automatically arguments for pretending risk can be removed from life by issuing one universal rule.
Humans understand this almost everywhere else.
Cars cause injuries and deaths. We do not respond by abolishing transport. We use licensing, road design, seatbelts, speed limits, vehicle standards and individual judgement.
People choke on food. We do not liquidise every meal for every adult. We alter food and supervision for the person whose age, health or swallowing ability warrants it.
Children fall while learning physical skills. We manage the environment and level of challenge rather than concluding that learning to climb, run or ride is inherently unacceptable.
The analogy is not that bones are cars or children.
The principle is that hazard and risk are not the same thing.
A hazard can exist while the level of risk changes dramatically according to the individual, item, exposure, environment and controls.
That is basic risk-management logic.
And it is exactly why "all bones are safe" and "all bones are dangerous" are both poor substitutes for thought.
But how often do dogs actually choke on bones?
This is where responsible argument matters.
It is easy to say, "dogs choke on bones".
It is much harder to answer the population-level question:
How frequently does a serious choking event attributable specifically to bones occur relative to the number of dogs exposed, and how does that rate change by bone type, preparation, dog size, chewing style and supervision?
We have not found robust population-level data capable of giving owners a clean universal number.
That absence should not be interpreted as evidence that choking does not happen.
It means the denominator problem matters.
Veterinary case reports and clinical experience can identify hazards extremely well. They do not necessarily tell us the probability of that hazard for every dog under every form of exposure.
The same distinction applies to tooth fracture.
A hard object can fracture teeth. That is established and important.
But "hard object" is not a complete exposure description, and "dog" is not a single mechanical category.
Responsible decision-making therefore has to ask more questions, not fewer.
Risk tolerance is not recklessness
Owners already make risk decisions for dogs every day.
Off-leash or on-leash?
Dog park or no dog park?
Swim in the dam or stay out?
Jump into the ute or use a ramp?
Play with another dog or avoid the interaction?
Chew this item or remove it?
There is no universal risk appetite because there is no universal dog.
The responsible objective is not maximum risk.
Nor is it automatically minimum possible risk regardless of behavioural cost.
It is an informed balance between:
- the individual dog;
- the potential benefit or purpose of the activity;
- the nature and severity of the hazard;
- the probability of harm;
- the item and environment;
- practical controls;
- supervision;
- and the owner's willingness to accept residual risk.
That is why Petelli's Structural Feeding™ framework begins with the dog rather than the product.
ASSESS → SELECT → SET → GRAPPLE → CHECK.
The apparatus does not declare an item safe.
The framework does not promise zero risk.
The owner assesses the dog, selects an appropriate item, establishes the environment, observes how the dog actually works it and changes or stops the session when conditions change.
That is a more intellectually honest proposition than pretending every dog and every chew can be governed by the same sentence.
Structural Feeding™ does not mean "give dogs bones"
This distinction is essential.
Structural Feeding™ is not a campaign to make every owner feed bones.
It is not a raw-feeding doctrine.
It is not a veterinary treatment.
It does not say a dog should be encouraged into a tooth-shattering contest with an impossibly hard object.
Petelli's definition is broader:
Structural Feeding™ is Petelli's term for a defined companion-animal feeding approach in which appropriate substantial foods and long-duration chews are presented against stable external physical structure, creating controlled resistance against which the dog can grip, pull, tear, scrape, lick, gnaw and work.
That could mean an appropriate poultry section.
A substantial meaty item.
A spine or other appropriately selected edible structure.
A long-duration chew.
Or, for a suitable dog and appropriately assessed session, a bone used for particular food-working behaviours rather than simply handed over with the assumption that every part should be consumed.
The common variable is not "bone".
It is structure and resistance.
From the wolf carcass to the suburban backyard
This is where the biological question finally meets the engineering question.
A wild canid feeding from a carcass does not need Petelli Ventures to invent resistance.
The carcass already has it.
The earth beneath it, its mass, connected tissues and sometimes the competing forces of other animals form part of the physical feeding environment.
A suburban dog is different.
We cannot drag a deer carcass into most kitchens.
We do not want raw food dragged through carpet, garden soil, couches or children's play areas.
We do not want the dog improvising restraint against whatever object happens to work.
Modern domestic life creates legitimate constraints.
So the engineering question becomes:
Can we preserve some of the physical interaction without recreating the entire natural environment?
That is the territory BoneZone® was built to explore.
Not by pretending the domestic dog is a wolf.
Not by pretending every natural behaviour is automatically safe.
And not by pretending modern feeding is inherently wrong.
By recognising that physical presentation itself is a variable we can design.
Perhaps the real opposite of helicopter parenting is not neglect
There is a false choice that appears constantly in discussions about animals and children alike.
Either protect them from everything, or apparently you do not care.
That is nonsense.
The alternative to overprotection is not recklessness.
It is competent management.
Allowing an animal to perform meaningful behaviour while identifying hazards and applying sensible controls is not an abandonment of welfare.
It may be part of welfare.
The challenge is knowing where the line belongs for the individual animal.
And that line moves.
A young healthy dog and an elderly dog may require different choices.
A calm stripper and a frantic crusher may require different choices.
An item may be appropriate at the beginning of a session and inappropriate after its size, shape or exposed surfaces change.
That is why active supervision is more sophisticated than a blanket yes/no rule.
It responds to reality.
Maybe the bone was never really the argument
The title of this article deliberately plays with one of the oldest clichés in our relationship with dogs.
Dog: man's best friend. Bone: dog's best friend.
But the deeper argument is not really about bones.
It is about whether modern companion-animal care has become so focused on protection, nutrition and human convenience that we sometimes overlook the animal's physical participation in its own life.
The science of canine chewing is still developing.
The welfare questions are not settled.
Veterinary warnings about dental injury and other hazards are real.
Anthropomorphism can both strengthen our care for animals and distort it.
Wild-canid feeding is informative but cannot simply be transplanted into a suburban home.
And different dogs require different decisions.
All of those things can be true simultaneously.
What we should resist is the temptation to turn uncertainty into prohibition simply because prohibition is easier to communicate.
Maybe the better question is:
How much of the dog should we remove from a dog's life in the name of keeping it safe?
And if we decide a behaviour matters, the next question should be:
How can we enable it more intelligently?
That is the question behind Structural Feeding™.
Pete's Perspective
I love my dog enough to want him around for as long as possible.
That is precisely why this subject gets emotional.
But I also do not want Phoenix to spend his life being protected from being a dog.
I've watched him play tug. I've watched him brace, pull, strip, scrape, lick and work food. I've watched him solve the mechanical problem himself whenever an item moves away from him.
For years I thought I was building a better way to hold a bone.
Now I think the more important thing we built was a way to give the food something to push back against.
That doesn't make every bone appropriate.
It doesn't make every risk acceptable.
It doesn't make my judgement right for somebody else's dog.
It means I would rather understand the dog, understand the item, understand the hazard and manage the interaction than reduce the whole subject to "bones bad" or "bones good".
Nature rarely works in slogans.
Dogs certainly don't.
Perhaps loving them as family should include enough respect to remember that.
