Why Bones Matter to Dogs: The Forgotten Science of Chewing, Marrow and Canine Wellbeing

We buy our dogs carefully formulated food, supportive beds, dental treats, puzzle toys, supplements, activity trackers, raincoats and cooling mats.

We monitor their weight. We study their stools. We compare protein percentages. We pay for grooming, vaccinations, parasite control, training and veterinary care.

Yet one of the oldest, most absorbing and biologically meaningful activities available to a dog has gradually been reduced to a warning label:

Chewing a real bone.

For some people, that warning ends the discussion. Bones can cause injuries, so bones must be removed from a dog’s life entirely.

For others, the argument travels too far in the opposite direction. Dogs descended from carnivorous ancestors, therefore every bone is natural, every dog instinctively knows how to handle one, and nothing serious can go wrong.

Neither position is adequate.

The first confuses risk avoidance with complete welfare.

The second confuses natural behaviour with guaranteed safety.

A more intelligent conclusion now sits between them:

Chewing appears to be an important component of canine physical and psychological wellbeing. A suitable real bone can provide an unusually rich combination of sensory engagement, food extraction, oral abrasion, resistance and behavioural satisfaction:- but only when the dog, the bone and the environment are managed responsibly.

The future of canine bone care does not lie in pretending that bones are harmless.

Nor does it lie in depriving every dog of them.

It lies in understanding them.


We have confused feeding a dog with fulfilling a dog

Modern dog food can provide complete nutrition without requiring a dog to tear, pull, strip, lick, scrape or work for any meaningful part of the meal.

That is extremely convenient for humans.

It does not necessarily satisfy the complete behavioural experience of being a dog.

A bowl of processed food can meet a dog’s caloric needs in less than a minute. It may supply protein, fat, vitamins and minerals while providing almost no sustained physical, sensory or cognitive activity.

The dog receives the nutrients.

The dog does not necessarily experience the process.

That distinction matters because animal welfare is not measured only by the absence of hunger, pain and disease. Good welfare also includes opportunities to perform behaviours that are important, rewarding and meaningful to the animal.

A major scientific review published in 2025 examined canine chewing through evolutionary biology, anatomy, physiology, behaviour and the Five Domains model of animal welfare. Its authors concluded that chewing contributes positively to canine physical and psychological health and appears to be an important regular component of a dog’s life.[1]

The review also noted that when preferred chewing opportunities are unavailable, dogs may redirect the behaviour towards furniture, household items and other inappropriate materials.[1]

This reframes what owners often call “destructive chewing”.

The dog may not simply be disobedient.

It may be attempting to perform a normal, strongly motivated behaviour using whatever substrate its environment provides.

A dog can therefore be nutritionally fed while remaining behaviourally underprovided for.

It can receive every required nutrient while lacking sufficient opportunities to manipulate, resist, extract, investigate and chew.

The question is not merely:

Has the dog eaten enough?

The deeper question is:

Has the dog been given enough opportunity to behave like a dog?


Chewing is not an accidental habit

Dogs do not chew only because they are bored, untrained or trying to damage human belongings.

Chewing is involved in:

·         obtaining and processing food;

·         investigating unfamiliar objects;

·         relieving discomfort during dental development;

·         play and exploration;

·         sustained occupation;

·         sensory stimulation;

·         and interaction with the environment.[1]

The activity recruits the jaws, teeth, head, neck and forelimbs. It demands concentration, repeated repositioning and continual adjustment of bite force and angle.

A suitable bone makes this process especially complex because a bone is not uniform.

It changes while the dog works on it.

There may be:

·         meat to strip;

·         connective tissue to pull;

·         cartilage to shear;

·         membranes and fascia to scrape;

·         marrow to lick or extract;

·         different odours released as surfaces are exposed;

·         irregular shapes requiring repositioning;

·         and resistance that changes throughout the session.

The dog is not simply waiting for food to arrive.

It is making progress through its own actions.

That difference is important.

The reward is not located only at the end of the activity. Much of the reward is contained within the process itself.

The dog investigates.

The dog grips.

The dog changes position.

The dog applies pressure.

The dog receives a small reward.

The dog repeats the sequence.

In practical terms, the dog has something worthwhile to do.


The behavioural value of a chew is measurable

The idea that chewing occupies and settles dogs is not based only on owner observation.

In a controlled 2023 crossover study, researchers compared four food-based enrichment options while dogs experienced a short period of social isolation:

1.      a long-lasting chew;

2.      a food-filled toy;

3.      an automated treat dispenser;

4.      and an automated dispenser combined with a recorded human voice.

The dogs interacted with the long-lasting chew for the greatest amount of time. During the early portion of the isolation period, the dogs provided with the chew were also assessed as showing calmer and more positively balanced behavioural states than those receiving the other enrichment options.[2]

That study does not prove that a bone cures separation anxiety.

It does not mean a chew can replace training, behaviour modification, medication or professional assistance for a dog experiencing genuine distress.

It demonstrates something more fundamental:

Chewing can hold a dog’s attention and influence its immediate emotional experience.

Another study examining chewing and canine cognition found that the relationship was not simplistic or identical for every dog. Associations between chewing frequency, fearfulness and working-memory performance varied between individuals.[3]

That result reinforces an important principle that runs through all responsible bone care:

The effects of chewing depend on the individual dog.

Dogs differ in temperament, motivation, physical ability, chewing intensity, previous experience and emotional state.

There is no universal bone, chew or session length that suits every dog.

But the scientific direction is increasingly difficult to ignore:

Chewing is not a meaningless pastime. It is a behaviour with measurable welfare significance.


Why a real bone is different from an ordinary toy

A synthetic chew can provide resistance.

A puzzle feeder can provide challenge.

A dental product can provide controlled abrasion.

A suitable real bone may combine those characteristics while adding animal tissue, changing texture, taste, scent and food extraction.

That does not automatically make a real bone safer.

It makes it biologically and behaviourally complex.

A bone is not one substance. It is a composite structure containing several materials with different physical and nutritional properties.


What is actually inside a bone?

The solid structure of bone consists largely of an organic collagen matrix reinforced by an inorganic mineral phase, primarily hydroxyapatite.[4]

The interaction between those components gives bone its unusual combination of rigidity, strength and limited flexibility.

This matters to a chewing dog because the structure supplies resistance.

Resistance is part of what makes the experience satisfying.

It is also part of what creates risk.

A material hard enough to withstand substantial loading can also place substantial loading on a tooth.

The fact that dogs are capable of chewing bone does not mean every bone density is appropriate for every dog.

A small section of relatively porous bone and the dense shaft of a large weight-bearing bone are not mechanically equivalent.

Nor are the teeth and chewing styles of a small elderly dog and a young, powerful working dog.

The word bone describes a category.

It does not describe a single level of hardness, geometry or risk.


The tissues attached to the bone matter too

Depending on how it has been butchered and prepared, a bone may retain:

·         muscle;

·         tendon;

·         cartilage;

·         periosteum;

·         connective tissue;

·         fat;

·         and marrow.

These tissues add texture, scent, flavour and extractable material.

They also alter how the dog interacts with the bone.

A dog stripping meat and connective tissue is performing a different action from a dog placing maximum force through its rear teeth in an attempt to crush dense cortical bone.

That distinction is central to responsible selection.

The objective should not be to find the hardest object that the dog cannot destroy.

Longer-lasting does not automatically mean safer.

An object may last a long time precisely because it is extremely resistant to the dog’s teeth.

The owner must therefore observe what the dog is doing rather than assuming that durability is proof of suitability.


What bone marrow really is

Marrow is the soft tissue found within cavities in bone.

In food bones from mature animals, the marrow of long bones is often highly fatty and energy dense.

It is extraordinarily attractive to many dogs because of its aroma, flavour and texture.

Marrow is frequently described online as though it were a miraculous package containing everything from collagen and minerals to stem cells, immune factors and gut-healing compounds.

That language usually travels much further than the evidence.

The scientifically defensible description remains impressive without exaggeration:

Marrow is a highly palatable, energy-dense animal tissue containing substantial fat and a mixture of fatty acids, along with smaller quantities of other biological constituents.

A 2022 study examining marrow from young farmed fallow deer found that fat accounted for approximately 75% to 83% of the sampled marrow, depending on season and nutritional status. Monounsaturated fatty acids formed a substantial part of its fatty-acid profile.[5]

Those precise figures cannot be transferred automatically to every marrow bone.

Marrow composition varies according to:

·         animal species;

·         age;

·         body condition;

·         diet;

·         anatomical location;

·         and physiological state.

The study nevertheless confirms the broader point:

Marrow is rich food.

It should not be treated as nutritionally insignificant simply because it is contained within a bone.

For the dog, marrow can provide:

·         concentrated energy;

·         strong taste and aroma;

·         a mixture of fatty acids;

·         a reason to lick and scrape;

·         and a continuing reward that encourages sustained interaction.

Marrow is not a complete diet.

It is not an unlimited supplement.

More is not automatically better.

Because it is rich and calorie dense, an excessive quantity may produce loose stools or gastrointestinal upset. It may also be inappropriate for an overweight dog, a dog on a fat-restricted veterinary diet or a dog with a relevant medical history.

A sensible bone session counts as food.

The marrow does not become calorie-free merely because the dog had to work to obtain it.


Does marrow coat, line or heal the dog’s gut?

Claims that marrow “coats the gut”, “seals the intestine” or directly repairs “leaky gut” are common online.

At present, there is not adequate controlled canine evidence to establish those claims.

Bone broths and bone-derived preparations may contain amino acids including glycine, proline and glutamine, along with minerals and other compounds. These substances are biologically relevant to connective tissue and intestinal-barrier function, and researchers continue to investigate their possible effects.[6]

However, there are several important differences between:

·         a nutrient being present;

·         that nutrient being digested and absorbed;

·         it reaching a particular tissue in a useful concentration;

·         producing a measurable biological effect;

·         and successfully treating a clinical condition.

Those steps cannot simply be assumed.

Research discussing bone-broth constituents and gut-barrier biology should not be misrepresented as proof that eating raw marrow heals intestinal disease in dogs.[6]

The 2025 canine chewing review also discusses possible relationships between chewing, saliva production, digestion, gastrointestinal motility and mucosal function. Some of those proposed mechanisms draw upon evidence from dogs, while others rely on broader mammalian research.[1]

The honest position is therefore:

What is reasonably supported

·         Chewing is part of the mechanical beginning of digestion.

·         Chewing stimulates saliva production.

·         Animal tissues associated with bones provide fats, proteins and amino-acid building blocks.

·         Some of those nutrients participate in normal tissue maintenance throughout the body.

·         Diet, mastication and gastrointestinal function are biologically connected.

What is not established

·         Marrow forms a protective physical coating inside the intestine.

·         Marrow repairs canine intestinal permeability disorders.

·         Bone chewing prevents gastrointestinal disease.

·         Raw bones treat inflammatory bowel disease or another diagnosed digestive disorder.

·         Every nutrient found in marrow produces a clinically meaningful benefit when consumed.

This distinction does not diminish marrow.

It protects the credibility of the entire subject.

A company claiming that every compound is miraculous may sound exciting for a moment.

A company that tells readers exactly where the evidence begins and ends becomes a source they can continue to trust.


Bones and teeth: the benefit is real

One of the strongest scientific arguments for bone chewing concerns the mechanical removal of visible dental calculus.

A 2016 study involving adult Beagles found that chewing selected raw bovine bones substantially reduced dental calculus.[7]

A separate 2020 study examined twelve adult Beagles given autoclaved compact or spongy bovine bone sections. After fourteen days, the spongy-bone group showed an 89.5% reduction in visible dental calculus, while the compact-bone group showed a 64.7% reduction.[8]

Some premolars and molars were cleared of visible calculus within three days.[8]

No enamel or root fractures were detected during that short study period. However, several dogs developed gingival injuries, and pieces of the more porous bone became trapped between the teeth of two dogs.[8]

These findings are significant.

They demonstrate that contact and friction during bone chewing can remove substantial deposits of calculus from the visible crown of the tooth.

They also demonstrate why headlines such as “bones clean dogs’ teeth” are incomplete.

The benefit is real.

The limitation is equally real.


Cleaner-looking teeth do not prove a healthy mouth

Dental calculus is mineralised material attached to the tooth.

Plaque is the bacterial biofilm that forms on the surface.

Periodontal disease affects the tissues supporting the teeth, including structures beneath the gumline.

A bone can scrape visible material from exposed tooth surfaces without removing disease below the gumline.

The 2020 bone study explicitly reported that chewing did not remove subgingival plaque or calculus.[8]

That is why a dog’s teeth can appear cleaner while veterinary dental disease remains present.

A review of canine periodontal research found that reported prevalence varies dramatically depending on how dogs are examined. Basic conscious examinations identify far less disease than comprehensive examinations performed under anaesthesia.[9]

The implication is clear:

Bone chewing is not veterinary dentistry.

It cannot replace:

·         regular oral examinations;

·         tooth brushing where practical;

·         investigation of bad breath, bleeding or oral pain;

·         dental radiographs where clinically required;

·         or professional periodontal treatment.

A responsible claim is:

Suitable bone chewing may provide substantial mechanical cleaning of visible tooth surfaces.

An irresponsible claim is:

Give the dog bones and dental disease is solved.

Those are not the same proposition.


Bones and teeth: the risk is also real

The fact that no fracture occurred in a small, short-duration controlled trial does not prove that fractures cannot occur in the wider dog population.

Dogs vary enormously in:

·         bite force;

·         tooth condition;

·         age;

·         jaw anatomy;

·         chewing style;

·         persistence;

·         and the hardness and shape of the bone provided.

The 2025 canine chewing review discusses potential complications associated with inappropriate chewing materials, including dental damage and gastrointestinal injury.[1]

A dog attempting to strip tissue and scrape a surface is behaving differently from a dog repeatedly placing maximum crushing force through a carnassial tooth.

The owner must watch the action:- not merely the object.

Warning signs that a bone may be too hard or unsuitable include:

·         repeated forceful crushing attempts;

·         intense biting with little surface change;

·         the dog bracing the bone to apply maximum jaw pressure;

·         visible tooth discomfort;

·         sudden reluctance to chew on one side;

·         bleeding from the mouth;

·         or a cracked, shortened or discoloured tooth.

No product, holder or feeding philosophy can repeal the mechanical limits of a tooth.


“Natural” does not mean harmless

The weakest argument in favour of bones is that dogs have eaten them throughout evolutionary history, therefore humans do not need to think about safety.

Natural environments contain disease, injury, hunger, parasites and premature death.

Nature does not guarantee a favourable outcome for every animal.

The fact that a behaviour has evolutionary relevance establishes potential biological meaning.

It does not establish zero risk.

Bones may contribute to:

·         dental fractures;

·         choking;

·         pieces lodged within the mouth;

·         oesophageal obstruction;

·         gastrointestinal obstruction;

·         constipation;

·         tissue irritation or perforation;

·         food conflict;

·         and exposure to microorganisms.

Pretending these risks do not exist damages the credibility of everyone advocating responsible bone access.

But the opposite argument is equally incomplete.

The existence of risk does not automatically prove that an activity has no value.

Dogs can be injured while:

·         running;

·         swimming;

·         playing with other dogs;

·         retrieving balls;

·         travelling in vehicles;

·         exercising in hot weather;

·         or eating food too quickly.

Responsible care does not require abolishing every meaningful activity that carries risk.

We aren’t  the short-sighted, risk adverse, Work Health & Safety Regulators of high-risk industries attempting to label all risk as bad.

However, it does require identifying hazards, understanding the individual and controlling exposure.

The correct question is not:

Are bones completely safe?

They are not.

The correct question is:

Can this particular dog interact with this particular bone, under these particular conditions, at an acceptable level of risk?

That is a far more demanding question. It is also a far more responsible one.


Raw-bone hygiene cannot be ignored

Raw animal products may carry bacteria capable of affecting dogs and humans.

A major review of raw diets found recurring microbiological concerns involving organisms such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, pathogenic Escherichia coli and other potentially harmful or antimicrobial-resistant bacteria.[10]

A 2020 study also found that dogs fed raw meat-based diets were more likely than kibble-fed dogs to shed several zoonotic and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in their faeces.[11]

A raw bone should therefore be handled with the same seriousness as raw meat intended for human cooking.

That means:

·         obtaining bones from a reputable food supplier;

·         maintaining appropriate refrigeration or freezing;

·         thawing safely;

·         washing hands after handling;

·         cleaning contaminated floors and surfaces;

·         preventing contact with human food-preparation areas;

·         disposing of spoiled or heavily contaminated bones;

·         and using additional caution around young children, elderly people, pregnant people and immunocompromised household members.

This is not an argument that every dog consuming a raw bone will become ill.

It is an argument that invisible microbiological risk is still risk.

A bone lying in the garden for several days, being buried, recovered, carried through the house and placed on a bed is no longer merely a chew.

It is a mobile raw-animal-product hygiene problem.

Controlling where the bone is used is therefore not just about keeping the carpet clean.

It can form part of responsible hygiene management.


Rich marrow and pancreatitis: avoid simplistic claims

Marrow is high in fat, but the relationship between dietary fat and canine pancreatitis is more complicated than commonly presented.

A 2026 review examining the available evidence concluded that the long-standing association between high dietary fat and pancreatitis in dogs is not supported equally strongly across all circumstances. The evidence contains limitations and important gaps.[12]

That means two extreme statements should both be avoided:

·         “Fat causes pancreatitis in every dog.”

·         “Fat has nothing to do with pancreatitis.”

The practical position remains straightforward.

A healthy dog tolerating a small quantity of marrow is not equivalent to a dog with:

·         previous pancreatitis;

·         hypertriglyceridaemia;

·         obesity;

·         impaired fat tolerance;

·         or a prescribed low-fat diet.

Owners of dogs with those conditions should obtain individual veterinary advice before providing marrow-rich bones.

Evidence uncertainty is not permission to ignore medical history.


Not every dog should be given a real bone

Responsible bone advocacy includes recognising when a bone is inappropriate.

Extra caution..... or complete avoidance.... may be required for dogs with:

·         fractured, loose or heavily worn teeth;

·         advanced periodontal disease;

·         a history of gastrointestinal obstruction;

·         a tendency to gulp or swallow large pieces;

·         previous pancreatitis or significant hyperlipidaemia;

·         chronic digestive disease;

·         pronounced resource guarding;

·         immune compromise;

·         or a veterinary-prescribed diet that should not be altered.

Puppies, elderly dogs, brachycephalic dogs and dogs with unusual jaw alignment may require different materials, sizes and supervision.

Body weight alone is not enough to determine suitability.

Two dogs of the same weight may have completely different:

·         muzzle structures;

·         tooth condition;

·         bite patterns;

·         food motivation;

·         and chewing intensity.

A gentle dog that spends twenty minutes stripping tissue presents a different risk profile from a dog that immediately attempts to split the densest section of the bone.

The dog must be assessed as an individual.


Responsible bone access is a managed activity

The intelligent middle ground is not casual bone feeding.

It is controlled bone access.

That requires several decisions.

1. Assess the dog before choosing the bone

Consider:

·         age;

·         dental condition;

·         chewing intensity;

·         jaw structure;

·         previous bone experience;

·         digestive tolerance;

·         tendency to swallow;

·         and behaviour around high-value food.

Where there is uncertainty about the dog’s teeth or medical suitability, consult a veterinarian.

2. Choose for the individual:- not for maximum durability

The hardest bone is not automatically the best bone.

Consider whether the dog is likely to:

·         strip;

·         scrape;

·         gnaw;

·         crush;

·         splinter;

·         or swallow.

A bone that encourages controlled tissue stripping and scraping may be preferable to one that provokes repeated maximum-force crushing.

3. Control the location

A loose bone can be:

·         dragged through soil;

·         buried;

·         hidden;

·         carried indoors;

·         placed on furniture;

·         fought over;

·         lost beneath objects;

·         or approached from unstable angles.

A defined chewing location makes observation, hygiene and removal easier.

4. Stabilise the activity where appropriate

A dog will often use its front paws, body weight and the ground to restrain a bone.

Securing a suitable bone can reduce uncontrolled movement and allow the owner to determine where the activity occurs.

Stability does not make an inappropriate bone safe.

It can, however, improve environmental control and make the dog’s chewing behaviour easier to observe.

5. Supervise the behaviour:- not merely the clock

Supervision does not mean standing somewhere within hearing distance.

It means watching how the dog is using the bone.

Remove it if:

·         sharp edges develop;

·         fragments begin breaking away;

·         the remaining piece becomes swallowable;

·         the dog repeatedly attempts to crush extremely dense material;

·         blood, gagging or distress appears;

·         the bone becomes excessively contaminated;

·         or the dog’s behaviour becomes unsafe.

6. Count marrow and attached tissue as food

The edible material contributes energy.

For dogs prone to weight gain, the rest of the daily ration may need adjustment.

7. End the session before the highest-risk stage

A bone does not need to remain available until every edible molecule has disappeared.

The final small, dry, heavily worked or splintered stage may present more risk than the earlier stage.

Responsible management often means taking the bone away while the session is still going well.


The false choice: unrestricted access or total deprivation

The bone debate has been trapped between two poor options.

Option one: unrestricted access

Give the dog a loose bone.

Assume instinct will handle selection, hygiene, duration and fragment size.

Allow the dog to bury it, retrieve it and carry it wherever it chooses.

Option two: complete deprivation

Remove real bones entirely.

Assume that processed food, a rubber toy and occasional dental treat provide an equivalent physical and behavioural experience.

There is a third position:

Provide an appropriate chewing opportunity while controlling the item, location, duration, hygiene and behaviour around it.

This is the synthesis the discussion has been missing.

It accepts that chewing matters.

It accepts that risk exists.

It refuses to use one truth to erase the other.

What responsible dog ownership should now recognise

The evidence does not justify telling every owner to hand every dog a large bone and walk away.

It also does not justify dismissing chewing as an optional novelty with no meaningful role in canine life.

·         Claims that marrow directly heals the canine gut remain unproven.

·         Bones can cause serious dental, gastrointestinal and microbiological harm.

·         Outcomes depend on the dog, the bone, the environment and the quality of human management.

A responsible owner does not have to provide a real bone against veterinary advice or contrary to the needs of the individual dog.

But every responsible owner should confront the underlying question:

Does my dog have an appropriate opportunity to chew, work, extract, investigate and experience sustained satisfaction?

For some dogs, the right answer may be a carefully selected synthetic chew.

For others, it may be a food-filled enrichment toy.

For suitable dogs under active supervision, a properly selected and managed real bone may provide one of the richest versions of that experience.

The bone was never merely an object.

It was:

·         food;

·         scent;

·         resistance;

·         occupation;

·         manipulation;

·         challenge;

·         extraction;

·         and reward.

All contained within one changing structure.

Perhaps the mistake was not that humans once valued bones too highly.

Perhaps the mistake was that we stopped understanding why dogs value them at all.

And once we understand that chewing is not simply an indulgence, doing nothing is no longer a neutral decision.

Not every dog needs to be given a real bone.

Every dog does deserve a serious answer to its need to chew.


Frequently Asked Questions

Are bones essential for dogs?

Whole, cut or portioned bones may not be nutritionally essential for a dog eating a properly formulated complete diet. However, current research indicates that chewing itself has important physical and behavioural significance. Bones are one possible chewing substrate, but they are not appropriate for every dog.[1]

Is bone marrow good for dogs?

Marrow is highly palatable and energy dense. It contains substantial fat and a mixture of fatty acids, but its precise composition varies between animals and anatomical locations.[5] It should be treated as rich food and offered in quantities appropriate for the individual dog.

Does marrow heal a dog’s gut?

There is not currently adequate controlled canine evidence showing that raw marrow coats, seals or heals the intestinal lining. Bone-derived preparations contain biologically relevant nutrients, but that does not prove that consuming marrow treats canine gastrointestinal disease.[6]

Do bones clean dogs’ teeth?

Controlled studies have shown major reductions in visible dental calculus after dogs chewed selected bovine bones.[7][8] Bone chewing does not remove disease below the gumline and should not replace brushing, veterinary examination or professional dental treatment.

Can bones break dogs’ teeth?

Yes. Tooth damage is a recognised risk, particularly where the material is excessively hard, the tooth is already compromised or the dog repeatedly applies maximum crushing force. Bone selection and observation of the dog’s chewing style are essential.[1]

Are cooked bones safer than raw bones?

Cooking does not necessarily make any bone safer. Heat can alter the physical properties of bone, while very hard processed or sterilised bones may still cause dental injury. Raw bones introduce additional microbiological risks. The relevant question is not simply whether a bone is raw or cooked, but whether its size, density, structure and condition are suitable for the individual dog, and its diet type.

Are raw bones free from bacteria?

No. Raw animal products can carry pathogenic and antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms. Safe sourcing, storage, handling, cleaning and disposal are important.[10][11]

Can BoneZone make any bone safe?

Pete’s Perspective: Why Bones Matter to Dogs

I did not need a research paper to convince me that chewing matters deeply to dogs. Dogs have been demonstrating that to anyone willing to observe them for thousands of years. The research is valuable because it measures, explains and tests parts of an experience that attentive owners have long recognised.

My own view is that the benefits of working a real bone are probably broader than current science has measured..... behaviourally, physically and perhaps nutritionally. That is my current 'judgement', not a clinical conclusion, and I will not pretend otherwise. Marrow may eventually prove to have benefits that have not yet been established in controlled canine studies. It may also prove less remarkable in some areas than popular claims suggest. Both possibilities still remain open.

What I reject is the lazy idea that no published paper means there is nothing worth investigating. I also reject the equally lazy idea that “natural” automatically means harmless.
