Article 1 - The Ground Is Part of the Chew

When most people think about giving their dog a bone, they focus on the bone itself.

Is it the right size? Is it too hard? Will the dog enjoy it? Will it last?

Far fewer stop to think about something just as important:

Where is that bone spending its time?

Once a bone is placed on the ground, it usually does not stay neatly in one spot. It gets licked, rolled, pushed, dragged, repositioned, dropped, picked up again and worked over from every angle. Saliva coats it. Dirt clings to it. Grass, grit, debris and whatever else happens to be on the ground can become part of the chewing session.

That means the ground is not just underneath the bone.

It becomes part of the chew.

This matters because outdoor surfaces are not controlled food-contact surfaces. Even a yard that looks clean can contain soil organisms, faecal contamination, plant material, decaying organic matter and environmental debris. Public spaces used by dogs can contain even more.

A major Australian study examined canine soil-transmitted helminths in urban parks across the country and found that 44.2% of sampled parks were contaminated with at least one species. That does not mean every backyard is dangerous, and it certainly does not mean every dog chewing on the ground will develop a problem. But it does prove a point many owners have never really considered:

Outdoor ground is not automatically a clean place for a long-lasting chew to live.

Then there is the hygiene issue at the chew level itself. Raw animal products can already carry bacteria before they ever touch the yard. Once that chew is repeatedly contacting outdoor surfaces, you are adding another unnecessary layer of exposure.

Chewing is a valuable natural behaviour. Dogs enjoy it. It can occupy them, engage them and provide enrichment. But if we can preserve the behaviour while removing one unnecessary environmental variable, that is worth serious attention.
